LibTool for Windows INSTALLATION, REQUIREMENTS AND TROUBLESHOOTING ---------------------------------------------- LibTool is a diagnostic program used for testing, troubleshooting, and upgrading firmware in the following libraries: VXA PacketLoader 1U Magnum 1x7 2U Magnum 224 Magnum 448 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Operating System: ----------------- The LibTool requires a Windows(r) 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP or 2003 operating system. ASPI Layer: ----------- On Windows 2000, XP, and 2003 systems, LibTool does not require the installation of an ASPI layer. On Windows 98 and NT systems, the LibTool requires the installation of an ASPI layer. During installation of the LibTool, you will be prompted if ASPI should be installed as well. Device drivers for SCSI 1U or 2U libraries: ------------------------------------------- A device driver is not necessary for the LibTool to detect and access SCSI 1U and 2U libraries. Device drivers for FireWire 1U libraries: ----------------------------------------- If you are using a FireWire 1U library, the LibTool requires that a device driver be loaded on the system for the 1U library and for the VXA-2 tape drive. Refer to your backup application for information on whether or not it installs library and tape device drivers. Otherwise, Windows device drivers for the 1U library and the VXA-2 tape drive are available for download from www.exabyte.com. INSTALLING LIBTOOL Follow these instructions to install LibTool on your system: 1. LibTool is available for download in ZIP(r) format. Download the zip file to your system. 2. Extract the zip file into the folder of your choice. You can either use the DOS utility "PKUNZIP.EXE" from the DOS command line (to do this, type "PKUNZIP THETOOL.ZIP") or, you can use WinZip or a similar utility. Be sure to write down the path into which you extract the files. You will need this information in order to install the program. 3. Method 1: Browse the folder where you unzipped LibTool and double-click on the file "Setup.exe." Method 2: Click your system's "Start" button, click the "Run" option, and select the "Browse" button. Select the directory where you unzipped LibTool and double-click on the file Setup.exe. You should now see the path and filename setup.exe in the run box. Click the OK button. 4. Follow the prompts of the setup program to guide you through the installation. PRIOR TO RUNNING LIBTOOL Before running LibTool, completely shut down your backup application and any services it may be running. The backup application may prevent communications with the library or may interrupt LibTool functions resulting in their failure. LIBTOOL FUNCTIONS Extensive on-line help is available in LibTool and can be accessed by selecting the Help button from any of the tool's pages. Brief descriptions of some of the tool's functions are contained here. DETECTING AND SELECTING A 1U LIBRARY When LibTool starts, it displays all detected 1U and 2U libraries in the detected devices drop-down list. If more than one library is present, you can select among the libraries listed in the drop-down list. UPGRADING FIRMWARE Follow these instructions to upgrade firmware using LibTool: 1. Download the latest library firmware release from www.exabyte.com. Firmware files on www.exabyte.com are typically archived in a ZIP(r) format. Extract the firmware zip file into the folder of your choice. 2. If multiple libraries are attached to the system, use the "Select Target Library" drop-down list to select the library to upgrade. 3. Select the Update Firmware button. Follow the prompts to guide you through selecting the firmware file. 4. While the firmware upgrade is in progress, the library operator panel will display its status. Do NOT interrupt a firmware update in progress. When the firmware update is complete, the library will automatically reset and begin its initialization process. RUNNING A DIAGNOSTIC TEST The LibTool can perform a diagnostic test on the library. The test performs a total of ten moves to and from the drive. Before initiating the test, it is necessary to have at least one cartridge in the library. It is not necessary to locate the cartridges in any particular slots. The test will detect which slots are occupied and will cycle through all of the occupied slots. The 1U or 2U library may be configured through its operator panel to enable a Fixed Clean Cell. On the 1U library, the Fixed Clean cell is slot 10. On the 2U library, the Fixed Clean Cell is slot 7. If the Fixed Clean Cell is enabled, the test will not use the cartridge in the Fixed Clean Cell. 1. If multiple libraries are attached to the system, use the "Select Target Library" drop-down list to select the library to test. 2. Select the Test Library button. Test status is displayed in the status window. OBTAINING A DIAGNOSTIC LOG If problems are experienced with the library, Exabyte Technical Support may ask for a log in order to better troubleshoot the problem. If instructed to do so by Exabyte Technical Support, follow the steps below to obtain a log file from the library ***Note*** A logfile should be taken as soon as possible after an error occurs. Do NOT power-cycle or otherwise disturb the library prior to taking the log. Power-cycling or continuing to use the library to perform additional operations clears important information from its buffers. 1. If multiple libraries are attached to the system, use the "Select Target Library" drop-down list to select the library from which to gather a logfile. 2. Select the Gather Logfile button and follow the prompts to save the logfile. 3. Send the logfile to Exabyte Technical Support.
